Are We Being Sold Into the Hands of Our Enemies?

Without Excuse
What becomes of a nation which turns away from its Christian roots and openly reviles God? Will God bring down the hammer of retribution upon such a nation, or will He allow it to continue scorning Him? Bible history gives us the answer. Ancient Israel’s banishment from her land in A.D. 70 is a stark illustration of what awaits America and other Western nations. fistAnd when God’s retribution falls, those nations will be without excuse.

The hatred of God displayed by America and the West cannot be attributed to ignorance. No human being is utterly ignorant of God, for no human being is born “godless.” Scripture tells us “He has put eternity in their hearts” (Ecclesiastes 3:11), which means God has endowed humanity with the innate comprehension of divinity – that there is more to this world than just this temporal orb upon which we exist. Furthermore, God has built into humanity the desire to seek Him. The apostle Paul writes: “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth … From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth … God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him …” And, Paul adds, God “is not far from any one of us” (Acts 17:24, 26, 27). Most, however, choose to suppress this innate knowledge of Him.

Forsaking God
Just as ancient Israel deliberately turned her back on a God who sought a personal relationship with her, so does the world today, especially the West. In America, there are more proclaimed atheists than at any other time of her history. According to a study by the Pew Research Center, more than 56 million people claim no affiliation with any religion. Of this number, 31 percent (17.4 million) are atheists, up from 25 percent seven years previous.[1]

Even more disheartening is the atheist outlook in Europe (the term “atheist” used here to include agnostics and the non-religious). Of the 25 most atheistic nations in the world (a list on which America is absent), Europe dominates banned biblewith 19 entries. Sweden holds the top spot, with Denmark at No. 3; Norway, 4; the Czech Republic; 6; Finland, 7; France, 8; and Germany, 11.[2]

All of these nations have a Christian foundation of one degree or another, but have long since turned their backs on God. In fact, as we continue to race into what atheists regard as more “enlightened” days, their mantra will be, “All thinking men are atheists.”[3] This quote from Ernest Hemingway accurately reflects the thinking of rebellious humanity, but he was beat to the punch about 1,900 years earlier by the apostle Paul who said it much more eloquently: “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing … For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe” (1 Corinthians 1:18, 21). The Psalmist said it this way: “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God’” (Psalm 14:1). These words are as true now as they were 3,000 years ago. Despite the technological advances made since the days of ancient Israel, nothing has changed regarding the heart. The most brilliant of men and women are every bit as foolish today as they were back then, intuitively knowing God, but choosing to deny Him.

Repeating History
Toward the end of the time of the Judges, a prophet, speaking for God, told the high priest Eli: “Far be it from Me; for those who honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed.” When Israel honored God, He blessed her; when she turned from Him, not only did He “lightly esteem” her, but He severely punished her.

America and the West are following in the footsteps of ancient Israel, and the end result will be disastrous. Israel “provoked the Lord to anger” (Judges 2:12). In return, God “delivered them into the hands of plunderers who despoiled them; and He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies” (v. 14). It appears this form of punishment – the influx of enemies across the offending nations’ borders – is one of the ways in which God is punishing Western nations which have turned their backs on Him.

muslims prayingThe most blatant example of this was the September 11, 2001, attack on the World Trade Center, which was just the beginning. Since then, “we have seen trains blown up in Madrid, the Tube and a bus bombed in London, Western journalists beheaded, the staff of Charlie Hebdo slaughtered, Jews killed in France and Belgium and now Denmark. This is not the work of a ‘dark ideology’ but of jihadi terror.”[4]

Things will get worse. According to The Pew Research Center, “… Muslims will grow more than twice as fast as the overall world population between [now] and 2050 and, in the second half of this century, will likely surpass Christians as the world’s largest religious group.”[5] While the general world population is expected to increase 35 percent in the next several decades, the Muslim population will grow by 73 percent in the same period. That’s an increased Muslim population of 1.6 billion in 2010 to 2.8 billion in 2050.[6] What does this mean for Western nations? Comparing 2010 numbers to 2050 projections, the percentage of Muslim populations in various Western nations looks like this: Sweden, current Muslim population, 4.8%, projected Muslim population, 12%; Belgium, 4.7%, 11.5%; United Kingdom, 4.8%, 11.5%; France, 7.5%, 11%; Germany, 6%, 10%; Italy, 3.8%, 9.5%; Netherlands 6%, 9%; Norway, 4%, 8.7%; Spain, 2%, 7.5%; Canada, 2%, 5.5%; Australia, 2.5%, 5%; United States, 1%, 2%.[7]

Lessons to Be Learned
Paul tells us: “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap” (Galatians 6:7). The West has gone way beyond the point of mocking God; it is outright ridiculing, disdaining, and even taunting Him. The West is snubbing its nose in a way as if to say, “Our will be done, not yours, God … that is, if you even exist. And even if you do silver crossexist, we still don’t care.”

God gave Israel opportunity after opportunity before finally casting her out of her land in A.D. 70, though He has and is continuing to bring her back. Before that, ancient Israel inhabited the Promised Land for about 1,500 years; that’s a “long leash” God gave her. How long of a “leash” will God give the Western nations which continually spurn Him?

We don’t know the answer, but one thing we do know, our Christian mandate: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20). We must share God’s truth with anyone He brings our way: atheist, agnostic, Jew, Muslim, black, or white. May God help us to do His bidding in the time we have left.
