When All Sorrow is Banished

Our Sorrowful Existence
The history of the human race can be summed up in one word: Sorrow.

sadThe prime reason for sorrow is death, and we mourn – sometimes with inconsolable grief – those we love who pass from this world. Another reason for sorrow is evil. We feel sorrow at the horrible things which happen on this planet: murder; rape; abortion; sexual slavery; incest; war, genocide. We feel sorrow at the fragility of the human condition: sickness; starvation; poverty; mental illness.

Since the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden – which caused sin to enter the world – not an hour has passed when some individual did not feel sorrow. And, tragically, until Jesus Christ returns to right all wrongs, the dark, noose-like specter of sorrow will never cease.

A Glorious Day Coming
However, Jesus will return, and when He does, He will gather all believers to Himself. When this occurs at the end of this age of human history, we will at once be given new, immortal bodies (2 Corinthians 5:1-5) and will, first, reside in the Millennial (1,000-year) Kingdom (Isaiah 11; Revelation 20:1-6) which will be ruled over by Jesus here on Earth, an Earth which will be totally refurbished, followed by the eternal state here on earth, “the new heavens and new earth” (2 Peter 3:8-13; Revelation Chapters 21-22).

What will our immortal lives here on earth be like? Isaiah 11 perhaps gives us the best overview of “Heaven on Earth,” but here I would like to take just a brief look at what the cloud-break-1409678-1278x860“nature” of eternal life will be, particularly the wondrous joy God will personally bestow upon us when that time arrives. What I look forward to more than anything – besides the opportunity to worship God in perfect holiness and purity – is the removal of all sorrow, a procedure God will enact on every individual in a very personal, tender, and touching way.

No More Tears
In eternity, God will personally see to it that His children grieve no more. Whatever it was here on this sin-stained (or pre-cleansed) earth which caused us sorrow, will be banished. Here is a smattering of verses which speak of truths you can cling to, embrace, and set your hope upon.

  • “See, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind” (Isaiah 65:17).
  • “For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes” (Revelation 7:17).
  • “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away” (Revelation 21:4).
  • “No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever” (Revelation 22:3-5).
  • “Everyone will sit under their own vine and under their own fig tree, and no one will make them afraid, for the Lord Almighty has spoken” (Micah 4:4).

Hold On

Because this world is so filled with evil, death, and sorrow, such precious promises are beyond our grasp to comprehend. Yet, God has made them, and as sure as He sent His Son into the world to atone for our sins, so will He surely fulfill every one of them.

In the meantime, hold on, believer, despite everything the world throws at you. God is on His throne, and Jesus is making ready His return. A day is coming when every tear will be wiped away, the memory of everything which ever caused sorrow will be expelled, and God Himself “will be our peace” (Micah 5:5).

Until then, look for every opportunity to share these wonderful truths with those the Lord brings into your life. May God help you to endure the sorrow of this world until that glorious day when it is banished forevermore!
