Blotting Out God: Dream On

He’s Back
DaVinciCodeDan Brown, author of The Da Vinci Code, is back with a new novel called Origin. In it, Brown continues his assault upon Christianity and the existence of God. Brown recently appeared on the CBS news program “Sunday Morning.” According to the show, Brown’s new book “puts God on the edge of extinction.”[1]

Brown said, “Traditionally, all the gods fall. And my question is, are we naïve to believe that the gods of today will not suffer the same fate?”[2] “Sunday Morning” correspondent Tony Dokoupil followed up with this question: “Would that be a better planet?” Brown’s reply was expected: “I personally believe that our planet would be absolutely fine without religion, and I also feel that we’re evolving in that direction.”[3]

This – the blotting out of God and religion – is the ultimate atheist dream, a dream which will never see reality.

Godless Paradise
Brown perfectly stated the core of the atheist manifesto. For man to cling to the backward notion that some unseen force created all that is seen is the height of foolishness. This is confirmed by the apostle Paul: “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God” (1 Corinthians 1:18).

The cause of this “foolishness” lies in the word “perishing.” Implied in this word is judgment – that there is a prescribed right and wrong way of living, and if the wrong way is embraced, there is an all-powerful force in the universe which will judge and punish it. Such ignorance!

slaveryIt is the natural bent of men and women to want to follow their own path of living and cast off the shackles of set moral laws. The main culprit in this shackled lifestyle according to the atheist is the God of the Bible, who insists things be done His way. Rather than conform – and in the doing reap the joys of obedience – the atheist would much rather push God “to the end of extinction,” or much better, blot Him out altogether.

Regarding the ugly offspring of God-worship – religion – this too must be blotted out of existence. To the atheist, religion is the realm of the foolish, and it has been tolerated long enough. It’s time to allow evolution to do its work and be done with this bastion of cretins.

The Reality
While the atheist tells himself that the world is on a one-way road to blissful Godlessness and religious-annihilation, the Book inspired by the God so hated by the world says otherwise.

Regarding the extinction of God, the Sovereign of the Universe counters:

This is what the Lord says – your Redeemer, who formed you in the womb: I am the Lord, the Maker of all things, who stretches out the heavens, who spreads out the earth by myself, who foils the signs of false prophets and makes fools of diviners, who overthrows the learning of the wise and turns it into nonsense, who carries out the words of his servants and fulfills the predictions of his messengers (Isaiah 44:24-26).

Of puny humankind which thrusts its grubby fist into the air and claims the world would be a better place without God’s precepts, the Almighty declares: “Woe to those who quarrel with their Maker, those who are nothing but potsherds among the potsherds on the ground. Does the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you making?’ Does your work say, ‘The potter has no hands?’” (Isaiah 45:9).

fistAnd to humanity’s dream of a Godless universe, the Everlasting Judge avers: “But you – come here, you children of a sorceress, you offspring of adulterers and prostitutes! Who are you mocking? At whom do you sneer and stick out your tongue? Are you not a brood of rebels, the offspring of liars?” (Isaiah 57:2-4).

Still Time
There was a time when I was one of them. From ages 17 to 21 I sneered at God and stuck my tongue out at Him. I was a rebel and a liar, and unworthy of the unimaginable grace He would soon bestow upon me (and I am still unworthy).

For Dan Brown and the multitudes who dream of blotting out God, the Lord, in His great compassion, assures that He “… is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).

Are there those in your life who dream of a Godless utopia? Don’t get angry, defensive, or despair. They still have the breath of life in them. Pray for them and, if they are willing to talk about it, tell them about the good and glorious God who desires them to come to repentance. There is still time for them to embrace the One they so abhor.
