Yes, Jesus IS God

Recently I have been receiving responses by a fellow blogger taking me to task for claiming Jesus is God.

the crossIn response to my testimony, “My Journey From Judaism to Christ,” he wrote: “Lovely to hear you came to believe Jesus Christ being ‘indeed the Son of God and Savior of the world,’ but it is not clear if the church you joined is a [place] where they worship the True God of Israel or that you joined a Trinitarian church and that you came to take Jesus as a god (like lots of Christians do) instead of accepting him as the sent one from God. We do hope you came to accept him as your Saviour and Way to God and do not consider him to be God.”

Responding to my more recent blog, “Another Tragedy and More Mindless Drivel from the Media,” he finished by writing: “Hopefully more eyes shall come to be opened by those who follow the task Jesus has given to his followers, so that when he returns faithful to God shall recognize Jesus to be the sent one from God, the son of man, and the son of God, and as the best mediator we can have between God and man.”

His basic message is: Jesus is quite a few things, but not God.

The Bible says otherwise. Let’s take a brief look.

A Thought to Consider
If Jesus is not God, His sacrificial death on the cross was worthless. If He was but a man, He would have been unsuitable as the vehicle through and for which sin can be permanently atoned. If Jesus were but a man, He would not have had the power to save man from their sins. Only God can forgive sins, and Jesus said: “‘But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins’ – then He said to the paralytic, “Get up, pick up your bed and go home” (Matthew 9:6) If Jesus did not have this authority, which only deity possesses, Jesus would not be God, He would not be able to forgive us, and you and I would be perishing in our sins.

General Statements
* John 1:1: “In the beginning was the Word [Jesus], and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

heaven imgage* John 1:2-3: “He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.” (We see here Jesus as Creator; compare with Genesis 1:1).

* Matthew 1:23: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God With Us.” (This verse is “borrowed” from Isaiah 7:14. Jesus’ very name, “Immanuel,” actually means “God With Us.”)

* Colossians 1:16: “For by Him [Jesus] all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities – all things have been created through Him and for Him” (Jesus as Creator.)

Jesus’s Statements About His Deity
In all of these verses, Jesus is equating Himself with God the Father, hence, claiming that He most certainly is God.

* John 10:30: “I and the Father are one.”

* John 14:9: “He who has seen Me has seen the Father.”

* John 8:19: “You know neither Me nor My Father; if you knew Me, you would know My Father also.”

* Mark 9:37: “Whoever receives one child like this in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me does not receive Me, but Him who sent Me.”

* John 12:44: “And Jesus cried out and said, ‘He who believes in Me, does not believe in Me but in Him who sent Me.’”

pray* John 5:33: “so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.”

* John 15:23: “He who hates Me hates My Father also.”

Jesus as “I Am”
Jesus equated Himself with Yahweh by applying the Old Testament title “I Am” (Exodus 3:13-14; Deuteronomy 32:29; Isaiah 43:10) to Himself.

* John 8:24: “Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”

* John 8:28: “So Jesus said, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me.”

* John 8:58: “Jesus said to them, “‘Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.’”

Divine Attributes
Knowing the thoughts and intents of people
* Matthew 9:4: “And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, ‘Why are you thinking evil in your hearts?’”

* Matthew 12:25: “And knowing their thoughts Jesus said to them, ‘Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste …’”

* Luke 6:8: “But He knew what they were thinking, and He said to the man with the withered hand, ‘Get up and come forward!’ And he got up and came forward.”

Healing People
* Numerous verses; among them; Matthew 8:2-4, 5-13, 14-17; 9:20-22, 12:9-13; Mark 2:3-12, 7:32-37; Luke 17:11-19, 22:47-51; John 5:1-9, 9:11).

Raising the Dead
* Matthew 9:18-26; Luke 7:11-15; John 11:1-44. JESUS EVEN RAISES HIS OWN LIFE, John 10:18: “No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again.”

Controlling Nature and Its Elements
* Matthew 14:22-33; Mark 4:35-41; John 2:1-11; 6:1-14.

More General Statements
* Luke 2:11: “… for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

* “Romans 10:9: “… if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Philippians 2:11: “… and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

* Acts 2:36: “Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ – this Jesus whom you crucified.”

* Acts 10:36: “The word which He sent to the sons of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ (He is Lord of all) …”

* Acts 20:21: “… solemnly testifying to both Jews and Greeks of repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.”

* Romans 1:7: “… to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Also Consider
* There are numerous verses where men and women worship Jesus as deity, including the wise men, a leper, a synagogue official, the Canaanite woman, the mother of the sons of Zebedee, His disciples (following His resurrection), and more.

Conclusion
OXYGEN VOLUME 13If with an open mind and heart and not being swayed by preconceived notions when reading the New Testament, I find it impossible to come to any other conclusion than that Jesus is God. An individual may choose to not believe that Jesus is God, but one cannot claim that the Bible does not teach Jesus as God. Yet, despite the evidence above, those who deny the deity of Christ will make an argument against every proof text listed.

For those who fully accept the deity of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, let’s be patient with those whose eyes the Lord has not opened to this truth, and continue to pray that the Lord will indeed open their eyes, just as He opened yours and mine!
