17 Slain: Just Another Day in Satan’s Playground

On Tuesday, February 14, 2018, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz barged his way into his former place of education, Marjory Stoneman High School in Parkland, Florida, and began firing away on his AR-15 assault rifle. This resulted in the deaths of 17 people and more injured, some severely.

Over the past few years, I have been starting more and more blogs this way. The names, dates, and locations were different, but the basic scenario was the same: A gunman, or several of them, barge into a church, a school, a nightclub, or a concert venue, and begin shooting indiscriminately at anyone who moves. This always achieves the desired effect: multitudes of dead bodies.

shootingAnd, of course, there are the talking heads on TV and radio who analyze every aspect of the most recent massacre, and they always attribute the reason for it to three specific causes: lenient gun control laws in the U.S.; mental illness on the part of the murderer; and lack of security at the venue where the massacre occurred.

Same old, same old. And always wrong. Let’s check off the three: Gun control laws: wrong. Mental illness: wrong. Negligent security: wrong.

I have written on this before (I’ll link to some of these below), so I won’t belabor the point. But the true cause for such horrors in our nation is that the United States of America is perpetually moving further and further away from the God who created us and blessed us as He has no other nation. We are a country which mocks God, rejects God, dishonors God, ignores God, denies God, creates our own God, and ridicules the people of God. We are a country which has told God to “Go away – and don’t come back! We want no part of You and Your intrusive holy commands.”

We are getting what we ask for – and Satan is listening. And with his time getting short, he is pouncing on every opportunity afforded him. And there are plenty of those.

Remember, Jesus Himself calls Satan “the prince of this world” (John 12:31). The apostle Paul refers to him as “the god of this age” (2 Corinthians 4:4) and “prince of the power of the air” (Ephesians 2:2). The apostle John tells us that “the whole world is under the very strong influence of the evil one” (1 John 5:19). The Earth is Satan’s playground.

police officerWhat does this mean? It means that Satan has a major impact on the ideals, opinions, goals, hopes, and views of the majority of people – those who don’t know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. It means that Satan’s influence permeates the institutions of humanity – its philosophies, education, and commerce. It means – whether we know it or not – that if we are not against Satan (through faith in God), we are for him. This includes much of the world which scorns the idea of a devil.

And Satan loves it when people don’t believe in him because it makes his job so much easier; it reduces resistance against him. In some cases, such as that of Nikolas Cruz, when the mind enters the really dark area, it makes room for Satan to come on in and turn such creatures into killing machines. The dark prince of chaos rejoices in such instances.

But, alas, the world outside of Christ is oblivious to this. The don’t understand that:

  • “… it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come – sexual immorality, theft, murder” (Mark 7:21).
  • “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure” (Jeremiah 17:9).
  • “Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil” (John 3:19).
  • “The hearts of people, moreover, are full of evil and there is madness in their hearts …” (Ecclesiastes 9:3).
  • “To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted” (Titus 1:15).

No, it isn’t about gun control, mental illness, or security measures. It is about the depraved human race and their denial of God. There is but one solution: that men and women all over the globe fall on their knees, beg God’s forgiveness, and give their lives to Jesus Christ. Nothing else will do.

Until then, the next massacre is just around the corner. And the next and the next.

Come quickly, Lord Jesus!
