The Perfect Government

Disturbing Times
We are living in tense, disturbing times, and the current political state of affairs continues to stoke the flames of hostility. However, the sad truth is that even if all sides of the political and cultural spectrums could agree on “ideal” candidates, the odds of governmentestablishing a perfect government here on earth are zilch. It is this way because outside of Jesus, perfect human beings do not, nor ever, existed. Perfection in this age of human history is impossible.

However, there will be a time when perfection becomes the norm and literal bliss will be the order of the day. This time of paradise will begin following the cleansing of the world’s evil at Christ’s return, followed by the establishing of His kingdom – His perfect government.

When Will This Government Begin?
Revelation Chapters 19 and 20 is the key. Though the exact hour of Christ’s return cannot be determined (Matthew 24:36), we do know what will be happening in the world at that time.

The Book of Revelation outlines the final seven years of this age of human history, with the primary focus on the second half of that time period. This span will be characterized by the rise of the Antichrist (Revelation 13); the near-destruction of Israel (Zechariah 13:7-9); the killing of Christians (Daniel 7:21; Revelation 13:7); the Rapture of the Church (1 crownThessalonians 4:16-17); and finally Christ’s return (Revelation 19:11-21).

Once Jesus cleanses the earth of all wickedness, He will establish His Kingdom here on this earth, a physically new-and-improved one (2 Peter 3:10-13). Revelation 20:4-6 tells us the duration of this kingdom:

Then I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the mark on their forehead and on their hand; and they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were completed. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with Him for a thousand years.

What Will This Government Be Like?
The 1,000-year (or Millennium) Kingdom will be a “theocracy” – a government in which God is recognized as the supreme civil ruler (Isaiah 9:6-7). The capital of the government will be a redeemed and restored Jerusalem, as is envisioned in Isaiah 2:2-4:

Now it will come about that in the last days, the mountain of the house of the Lord will be established as the chief of the mountains, and will be raised above the hills; and all the nations will stream to it. And many peoples will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that He may teach us concerning His ways and that we may walk in His paths.” For the law will go forth from Zion and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. And He will judge between the nations, and will render decisions for many peoples; and they will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, and never again will they learn war.

holding.handsFrom this passage, we can determine that in Christ’s government:

  • Jerusalem – “the mountain of the house of the Lord” – will be the very literal center of the world.
  • Jerusalem will be the citizens’ primary destination (for purposes of worship).
  • The citizens will live righteously.
  • Jerusalem will be the place from which Jesus issues forth His edicts.
  • Jesus will be the sole ruler and judge of all nations.
  • War will be abolished as peace will permeate every inch of the Kingdom.

What Will Life in This Government Look Like?
Again, allow Scripture to speak for itself, specifically Isaiah 11:6-10:

And the wolf will dwell with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little boy will lead them. Also the cow and the bear will graze, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox. The nursing child will play by the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child will put his hand on the viper’s den. They will not hurt or destroy in all My holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. Then in that day the nations will resort to the root of Jesse, who will stand as a signal for the peoples; and His resting place will be glorious.

Entrance into the Kingdom
cross-newYes, glorious indeed, but how does one gain entrance into this Kingdom where a perfect government will exist? To enter that later Kingdom, one must transact spiritual “business” with the King now, in this kingdom. The future Kingdom is open to all those in this kingdom who will bow the knee to Jesus Christ by confessing their sins to Him and repenting of them, and accepting Jesus as their Lord and Savior. In return, Jesus will “save” you from your sins and the consequences of them (Romans 10:9; Acts 16:31).

And when Christ returns at the end of the age, if you are still alive, you will be ushered into the new Kingdom with a new and improved body (1 Corinthians 15:50-54). If you have already died, you will be resurrected (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18), with a new and improved body, and join the rest of history’s believers as citizens in King Jesus’ righteous, peace-filled, and perfect government!
