Giving Madonna a Pass

Ruffling Feathers
Pop-music icon Madonna recently ruffled Pro-Life feathers with her opinion on what she sees as Jesus’ viewpoint on abortion.

Speaking to Australian talk-show host Andrew Denton, Madonna, who was raised Catholic, said, “Let’s talk about Jesus’ point of view about women. Let’s talk about it. And don’t you think Jesus would agree that a woman has the right to choose what to do with her body?”[1]

I suppose any time a well-known celebrity makes a controversial remark it becomes news, particularly on the issue of abortion. Indeed, many in the Christian community took issue with Madonna’s comment, which they view as audacious in light of the fact that Jesus is the Creator of life (John 1:1-3; Colossians 1:16), not the destroyer.

Also, there is a degree of outrage among the Christian community when unbelievers claim expertise regarding the teachings of Jesus – real or imagined.

Not As Outraged
Of course I noted the outrageousness of Madonna’s comment, but rather than get angry, I simply shrugged. In fact, I just as soon give Madonna a pass for her trespass.

Why is this? I give Madonna a pass because I file her comment under the category of “What Do You Expect?” Madonna’s “game plan” at age 60 is the same as it was when she became famous in her 20s: To peddle as much salacious and vile material as she can, always ramping up the rebellion level against her upbringing.

She certainly in no way appears to be a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, and she reflects this in just about everything she does and says. So for her to say that Jesus is pro-abortion is hardly an earth-shaking revelation. Rather than get angry at her for “doing what comes naturally,” I much prefer to pray for her, that the Lord Jesus would reveal Himself to her and that she will fall on her knees in worship to Him as His daughter in Christ.

On the Other Hand
Rather than expending emotional energy on Madonna’s comments, lovers of the Lord Jesus should be angry about what is going on within the Church.

In the West, the culture is becoming more and more influential in determining Church doctrine than is the Word of God. In just about every denomination, leaders are compromising God’s teaching on homosexuality, same-sex marriage, the authenticity of the Bible, the reality of Satan, and the very real truth that there is a Hell and that those who do not give their lives to Jesus will spend eternity there.

The Church is imploding, bowing down before the altar of cultural correctness and sensitivity, and many a church-attender is being fed a toothless Gospel filled with heresy and soul-destroying distortion.

We are living in the era clearly foreseen by the apostle Paul: “For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear” (2 Timothy 4:3).

Therefore, I am more than willing to give the unbelieving Madonna a pass for her ridiculous comment; the crumbling and heretical Church, however, that’s another story.
