Perfect Passage!
There are some Bible passages so perfectly stated and inspiring that I can’t help from adding a thought or two to them – not to explain, but to extol!

One such perfect passage is 1 Corinthians 16:13-14, and it reads this way: “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love.”

A perfect passage – and great marching orders for Christians!

Counsel and Equipping
This admonition by the apostle Paul, comes at the end of the contentious book of 1 Corinthians. This church had been rife with instability and sin, and Paul had spent the previous 15 chapters steering the Corinthians back to the right course. Difficult issues were discussed, childish behavior was castigated, and inner turmoil was calmed. In the midst of all this, wonderful and timeless teaching was presented – particularly that of the resurrection of believers in Chapter 15.

Now, in Chapter 16, it was time to wrap up the letter. Paul wanted to both encourage and counsel the Corinthians, equipping them to fight the battles of the faith – both inside the church and out.

In so doing, he encouraged, counseled, and equipped you and me as well.

In the Crosshairs
Let’s read 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 again: “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love.”

What a great passage for 2019! It takes on even greater meaning when you consider that the world is growing more hostile toward Christianity, and that you and I will be more in the crosshairs of those seeking to abolish or criminalize it.

Knowing this, we need to be on our guard against those who look to cheapen our God and our Christ, seeking to eradicate the precepts of His holy Word. We also need to stand firm in our faith – even to the point of losing our jobs, being imprisoned, or facing the prospect of death because of it.

To accomplish this, it will require courage and strength. This does not mean that we can’t have fear and weaknesses, but that we should find our mettle in God, knowing that our eternal souls are tightly protected in His mighty hand.

But to me, the last marching order is the most important: “Do everything in love.” I have harped on this before so I won’t strain the point, but I am growing increasingly annoyed at the social media posts of fellow evangelicals who focus 98 percent of their attention on politics while ignoring the Gospel.

If I was an unbeliever viewing their posts, I would have no desire to want to seek their God. When all they do is criticize liberal ideology and demean those on the political left, they do more harm to the cause of Christ than good.

Rather, evangelicals should “Do everything in love.” One way to do this is instead of trying to change the political views of the unsaved, we should present to them a true Gospel message, making clear the “lostness” of the human race, the consequences of that “lostness,” and that a loving God sent His Son into the world to save us from those consequences.

Our Marching Orders
So, there it is, fellow believers; Paul has stated it well! Let’s get out there and be on our guard, stand firm in the faith, be courageous and strong, and do everything in love!
