Jesus, Our Great God!

I love when Jesus uses the same phrasing as God the Father in describing Himself. For me, this is more substantiation of the deity of Christ, that He is indeed what He claims to be: Our Great God.

In Isaiah 41:4, God the Father proclaims: “Who has performed and accomplished it, Calling forth the generations from the beginning? ‘I, the Lord, am the first, and with the last. I am He.’”

In Isaiah 44:6, God the Father declares: “Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: ‘I am the first and I am the last, and there is no God besides Me.’”

In Isaiah 48:12, God the Father pronounces: “Listen to Me, O Jacob, even Israel whom I called; I am He, I am the first, I am also the last.”

The theme here is God as “the first and the last.” This references God’s control over every aspect of existence. He was there before the beginning of time; will be there after the abolishment of time (the eternal state); and, as such, has total authority of all things in between.

Another way to read the phrase “first and last” is “all in all.” God is everything; he is the sovereign ruler of everything!

Jump now to Revelation 1:17-18; the speaker is Jesus Christ, and he proclaims:

When I [the apostle John] saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. And He placed His right hand on me, saying, “Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, and the living One; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death and of Hades.

No apologies, no explanation. Jesus simply declares that He and God the Father are one (see John 10:30) in that just as God the Father is the first and the last, so is He!

Jesus Christ is our Great God who came to Earth in human form, lived a perfect human life for 30 or so years, died on a Roman cross to reconcile the world to Himself, and offers salvation to all who will place their faith in Him. All glory, honor, and majesty to Jesus Christ, our Great and Glorious God!
