It’s Coming – and It’s Marvelous

A Nice Match!
It’s interesting how nicely certain passages of Scripture match up, especially when you’re not looking for a match. Such was the case the other day as I read through the Books of 2 Peter in the New Testament, and Habakkuk in the Old Testament.

These books aren’t known for being “connected,” but in essence, ALL Scripture is connected because though the Bible has many writers, there is but one author: God. Because of this, there is a consistent thread going through all 66 books of the Bible which connects them all.

The Great Find|
I am excited about two verses in particular.

The first is 2 Peter 3:13: “But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.”

The second is Habakkuk 2:14: “For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.”

These two verses speak of the “permanent” eternal state.

The Eternal State
Why do I qualify the phrase “eternal state” with the word “permanent”? I do this because the “current” eternal state – or at least the “place” of eternity – is temporary.

Now, when believers in the Lord Jesus Christ die, they are ushered immediately into the presence of God (Philippians 1:23) in a place which Jesus calls “Paradise” (Luke 23:43), which of course, is Heaven. We’re not sure where Heaven is, but according to the apostle Paul, it is “up” in what he calls “the third heaven” (2 Corinthians 12:2). In other words, Heaven is somewhere out in the cosmos, but we’re not sure where. One thing we do know for sure: Heaven is not down here on Earth.

But it will be! Though it is beyond the scope of this blog to detail this truth, you can read about it primarily in Revelation 21:1-8, Isaiah 65:17-25, and 2 Peter 3:10-13. (A key verse is Revelation 21:3: “God’s dwelling place is now among the people [here on a ‘renovated’ Earth], and he will dwell with them.”

The Character of the Eternal State
This is what I was really getting after – the character of the eternal state. What will it be like? What will be its chief attributes, or distinctives?

This is where our two wonderfully-matched verses come in. What will be the character of the eternal state?

Heaven on Earth will be a place of uprightness, morality, virtue, and integrity. How do we know this? We know this from 2 Peter 3:13 (italic added): “But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.”

Why will it be like this? It will be like this because Habakkuk 2:14 tells us, “For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.”

Heaven on Earth will be a place of pure righteousness because every citizen of Heaven and every living creature will be “filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord”!

In this dark, dark world we live in, this is truth we can cling to. Yes, Heaven on Earth permeated by righteousness and the knowledge of the Lord …

It’s coming – and it’s marvelous!
