Not in This Era
Bible-readers too often forget the backdrop in which the Bible is set. The Word of God – geographically speaking – is Israel- and Middle East-centered, not Western-centered. Accordingly, let’s be careful about applying verses on freedom and liberty to our modern-day perception of these words.

In fact, do you know that the Bible does not teach about independence and liberty in political and national terms – at least as guarantees? Yes, we in the U.S. live in a “free” society, but much of the world doesn’t – nor does God promise such “civic” freedom to the world in this age of human history.

(We will, however, have perfect independence and liberty in the Millennial Kingdom ruled over by the Lord Jesus Christ after His return to Planet Earth.)

So no, political and societal freedom are not biblical promises for our current world, though their concepts are lauded and promised (see Isaiah Chapters 11 and 60).

What We Do Have
What God does promise, however, is spiritual freedom, specifically, in one particular area. Romans 8:2 tells us: “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.” Similarly, in John 8:31-32, Jesus tells us: “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” We learn a few verses down that this refers to freedom from the slavery of sin.

And really bringing it home is Romans 8:1-2, where Paul eloquently and powerfully assures us: “Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.”

July 4 Blessings
This Independence Day, in thanking God for the rare privilege we have of living in a “free” society, let us also thank Him for freeing His children from the deathly wages of sin! May we freely praise God with all of our hearts and thank Him that we are no longer subject to Satan’s rulership and have been emancipated from the vile oppression of his spiritual tyranny.

Even as the U.S. spirals out of control, nothing can separate believers from the freedom over sin God has granted to those who love the Lord Jesus Christ.

May we always be mindful of this greatest “independence” of all as we draw ever nearer to His blessed return!
