Do Not Fear What They Fear (Or Talk-Show Host Drivel)

Worldly-Thinking “Christians”
Most mornings I listen to a local conservative morning talk show where the host talks primarily about national and international politics. He claims to be a “Christian,” yet whenever he discusses topics such as Covid-19, riots, President Trump, Republicans, Democrats, national security, and immigration, he talks exactly as the rest of the world talks.

I find this trait in just about every local and national conservative talk-show host who claims to be “Christian.” They zealously defend their beliefs and denounce the “other side,” but never have I heard any of these proclaimed “Christians” say anything to the effect of, “But you know what, listeners? I am not worried. We have a God who is in control and, in the end, His will will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.”

Of course there are very serious issues with which true Christians must be concerned, among them religious liberty, abortion, and freedom of speech, however, we are to lay these at the Lord’s throne of grace, and “cast all our anxieties upon Him” (1 Peter 5:7). Yet, I hear nothing ever approaching such sentiments from conservative “Christian” talk-show hosts.

The Motivating Factor
So, what is the motivating factor these pundits have in common, besides the fact that I truly don’t believe they are saved? Why do they express the thoughts they express and do so in a way which lacks just as much grace, diplomacy, and dignity as “the other side”?

fear

The answer is fear. Without a real relationship with God, they are left to their own carnal contrivances, believing it is up to the human race alone to deal with the problems of the human race. They don’t believe God will help, therefore they must work things out on their own.

Regarding President Trump, despite his many flaws, I still believe the U.S. will be better off with him in the White House than if Joe Biden wins the election. Unsaved conservatives believe this also, but there is a major difference between them and believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. Conservatives who don’t know the Lord experience tangible, biting, and even paralyzing fear at the prospect of a Biden presidency. They really do fear that the sky will fall and that the country as we know it would be lost.

This may be true, but this reality should never result in fear for the believer. In 2016, I was convinced Hillary Clinton would win the election, but I never feared. I know that God is completely sovereign and that nothing happens on Earth which is too big for Him to handle. Had Ms. Clinton won, it is not as if God would have said: “What? How did this come about? I turned My back for one minute to deal with a situation in Nigeria, and this happens.”

And Yet …
And yet, though Christians should never fear such things, too often we are just as bad as unbelievers, as “those who have no hope” (1 Thessalonians 4:13); and this despite the fact that we worship a sovereign and all-powerful God.

book of isaiah2

One particular passage of Scripture encapsulates this confidence-nurturing mindset, its instruction being one every believer should embrace. The setting is the Southern Kingdom of ancient Israel, and doom is impending. Yet in the face of this, the prophet Isaiah warns those who belong to the Lord not to fear. He writes:

Do not call conspiracy everything this people calls a conspiracy; do not fear what they fear, and do not dread it. The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy, He is the one you are to fear, He is the one you are to dread (Isaiah 8:12-13).

As I see it, this is God’s mandate to all believers. This is God saying, Why do you fear who wins elections? Why do you fear economic collapse? Why do you fear the wickedness of man? Why do you fear pandemics? Why, even, do you fear for your lives? Don’t you know that I am in control and rule all things. Do NOT fear what unbelievers fear; they do not have Me as their portion, BUT YOU DO!

How about it, believer, is this truth, or is it not? So what if every conservative is voted out of office and this country is run solely by the most godless of liberals. Things are heading there anyway. Don’t you know that God is in complete control and that in the end it is HIS will – and HIS alone – which will win the day?

Let the conservative “Christian” talk-show hosts obsess in conspiracies and fear; let we as believers in the Lord Jesus Christ obsess in His Holy Word, and on doing His work and will here and now until the glorious day of His return!
