John MacArthur on the Brink of History

Leading the Way
John MacArthur has had more influence on my Christian walk than any other individual (a claim I’m sure thousands of believers can make).

Less than a month after accepting the lordship of Jesus Christ in October of 1986, a friend of mine loaned me a cassette tape featuring Pastor MacArthur, and I was immediately won over by His biblically-sound, uncompromising, verse-by-verse teaching. I modeled my own subsequent teaching and instructional writing after his pattern.

Pastor MacArthur has been in the pulpit of Grace Community Church (now in Sun Valley, California) since 1969, and his exceptional teaching has impacted millions of Christians worldwide.

It is only fitting, then, as the Church in America is being attacked as never before in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, that Pastor MacArthur stands at the forefront of the counterattack, saying, “We serve God, not Caesar.” The Church in America is on the brink of history, and Pastor MacArthur is leading the way.

Satan’s Doing
Last week, Pastor MacArthur announced that his congregation – which totals a robust 8,000-plus on “normal” Sundays – will be meeting for worship in defiance of lockdown orders from Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Said Pastor MacArthur: “We will obey God rather than men. We’re going to be faithful to the Lord and we’re going to leave the results to Him. Whatever happens is going to be what He allows to happen. But He will be on our side because we will be obedient and faithful to His word.”[1]

As a result, “The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health officials have reportedly told MacArthur he could face ‘repercussions such as fines and even possible arrest.’”[2]

All believers should be watching how this drama unfolds. I believe the shutting down of churches is ultimately Satan’s most severe attempt at exterminating Christianity here in the States. Though I wouldn’t call government mandates to shut down churches “evil” – as they believe they are being logically cautious – I think they are totally blind to the fact that they are Satan’s pawns, unwittingly doing his bidding.

Ensuing Showdown

Though many pastors across the country have fought back against what they believe are draconian measures, now one of the most famous of them all – and in my opinion the most esteemed – has said “no.” And he means it!

Pastor MacArthur will not yield to the threats of arrest and will go to jail if he must. And if this happens, many other pastors will do likewise, and congregations will follow their pastors. And if this happens, law enforcers will be called upon to block entrances to churches, physically preventing Americans from holding worship services inside their facilities.

And if this happens, it will be an ugly and telling foreshadowing of what course our country will be heading in. If Gov. Newsom relents and allows California churches to meet freely, then perhaps America has one last gasp of religious freedom left before the start of the climactic seven years of this era of human history (Daniel 9:24-27).

However, if Gov. Newsom deals with Pastor MacArthur with a heavy hand, it will kick off a wave of similar actions nationwide, and religious freedom as we know it here in the U.S. will take on new meaning.

But regardless of the ensuing showdown, God will preserve those who are His, and He will do so through the trials and tribulations of this world all the way until He delivers us to Glory.

In the meantime, one of the Lord’s most faithful servants is leading the charge, and we who have benefited so greatly from him must pray for Pastor MacArthur as he stands on the brink of history.
