The Israel Peace Deal: Harbinger to the Antichrist?

The Abraham Accord
On Tuesday, September 15, 2020, President Trump brokered a major peace agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. This breakthrough pact, called “The Abraham Accord,” was signed at the White House, with President Trump calling it “an incredible day for the world.”[1]

For now, the treaty is good as it normalizes relations between Israel and two nations which formally did not recognize Israel’s “legitimacy.” From a human perspective, this is indeed a good thing, and – for now – the people of all three nations will benefit from it.

However, from a spiritual perspective, I see trouble brewing for Israel as she continues to rely upon her human adeptness to survive rather than turning to God. Israel’s shunning of God will lead her down the path to the Antichrist, and this accord could play a massive role in end-time events.

Instructive Language
Students of prophecy know that the world is heading toward a secular, one-world government where humanism will rule the day. It is instructive, then, that some of the quotes coming out of the White House signing ceremony oozed new-age, all-inclusive language.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the Abraham Accord as “the dawn of a new Middle East.”[2] And President Trump lauded the signing as enabling the three nations “to take a major stride toward a future where people of all faiths live together in peace and prosperity.”[3] He further added that the accord opens the doors for Muslims, Jews, and Christians “to live together, pray together, and dream together.”[4]

Despite President Trump’s good intentions – and I truly believe his intentions are good – his language drips with one-world, humanistic savor.

Biblically Speaking
So, how is it possible for the Abraham Accord to serve as a harbinger for the Antichrist? The key is Daniel 9:27: “He [the Antichrist] will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.”

The timeframe is the 70th Week of the Book of Daniel – the final 7 years of this era of human history – and the two parties are Israel and the Antichrist. This verse tells us that the Antichrist (Israel won’t know it’s him) will sign a 7-year peace pact with the Jewish nation, but will savagely turn on Israel halfway through it, thus shattering the peace.

Now, notice that the Antichrist will not “create” a brand-new covenant with Israel, but will “confirm” one. The Hebrew for “confirm” is gawbar, which means “to strengthen.” In other words, the Antichrist will re-enforce an already-existing peace treaty with Israel, not create an entirely new one.

Oh, and another thing, no doubt other Arab nations will sign on to this agreement. Is it possible that a total of 10 nations will sign on? After all, in describing the Antichrist, we read in Revelation 13:1: “The dragon [Satan] stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast [the Antichrist] coming out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name.”

Speculation of Course
Of course this is speculation, as I am a student of end-times prophecy. But I point to several factors:

1. We are living in extraordinary times where events – bad events – are moving at speeds we’ve never before witnessed.

2. Israel is destined to enter into an already-existing peace treaty with the Antichrist, and here she is signing unprecedented peace treaties with Arab nations.

3. Though Bible-studying Christians differ greatly in their interpretation of end-times prophecy, the vast majority of us believe Christ’s return is growing very, very near.

And if number 3 is accurate, then the events which will lead to our Lord’s return must soon begin unfolding. Perhaps the signing of the Abraham Accord is that first major step, and one which will serve as a harbinger to the Antichrist!
