Election 2020: I Shall Not Be Moved!

Trump vs. Biden
Many Bible-believing Christians have laid out their mourning clothes in preparation of Joe Biden winning the 2020 Presidential Election.  It’s a close race, and despite the numerous prognostications being disseminated, no one knows how this thing is going to turn out.

But no matter who wins, the downward course of our nation will continue. What is to be determined is the rate of our descent – a President Trump victory will mean a slower demise; a Biden victory an accelerated one. But, oh yes, we are descending to the brink of destruction while at the same time the return of the Lord Jesus Christ looms ever larger.

Different Reactions?
Until then, however, we are in the midst of the Presidential Election, and it is menacing. It is no surprise that liberals are promising anarchy if President Trump wins, and many others are vowing to flee the country. Such behavior is expected among those who place their faith in the things of mortality.

However, to hear politically-driven evangelicals talk and to scan their social media posts, you would think they suffer from the same malady as their unbelieving counterparts: hopelessness. This should never be.

No matter what happens in this election, Bible-believing Christians must remember that God is in control, He has a will for Planet Earth, and nothing that happens on this planet can alter His unalterable will. He reminds us: “See now that I, I am He, And there is no god besides Me; It is I who put to death and give life. I have wounded and it is I who heal, And there is no one who can save anyone from My hand” (Deuteronomy 32:29).

How’s that for reassurance? Reassurance enough that believers should be finding their hope and strength in such truths – not in who wins or loses Presidential elections.

Don’t Be Moved
In considering believers who are worrying themselves silly, the lyrics to a famous hymn came to mind. It is called, “I Shall Not Be Moved,” and the first few stanzas go as such:

Oh I, shall not, I shall not be moved
I shall not, I shall not be moved
Just like a tree planted by the water
I shall not be moved

I’m on my way to heaven, I shall not be moved
On my way to heaven, I shall not be moved
Just like a tree planted by the water
I shall not be moved

The prolific hymnist who penned this great spiritual in 1906, Alfred Henry Ackley, knew in Whom his hope rested. Mr. Ackley knew that no matter what happened on Earth, he was a child of the King of kings and Lord of lords and that he was “On my way to heaven.”

He knew, too, that he was “Just like a tree planted by the water” – a reference to Psalm 1:3 and Jeremiah 17:8-9 – and that no matter what, “I shall not be moved.”

And don’t you, believer, know the same thing? Are you losing sleep over the upcoming elections? Is it consuming your every thought? Do you fear the results?

If so, stop! Please remember that if you belong to the Lord Jesus Christ, you are going to Heaven and are like a tree planted by the water. And though this world is cracking at the seams, you – with a confident and radiant heart – can say:

“I shall not be moved!”
