God’s Communication
I’m glad that even though I have read through the Bible multiple times, the Lord continues to powerfully open up His Word to me.

This happens in a simple, quiet way. I read my Bible, come to a particular verse or passage, and am struck by it. It is as if the Lord is saying: “I know you have read this many times over the years, but now, at this point of your life, I want it take hold in your heart.”

There are two things I love about this when it happens.

First, it illustrates the awesome truth of Hebrews 4:12: “For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, even penetrating as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”

And second, in a very personal way, it is God’s way of assuring me that He is not through with me yet; that He wants me to be reading His Word with the expectation that He has something He wants to communicate to me.

A Poignant Passage
I experienced this again this morning as a poignant passage jumped off the Bible and struck me right between the eyes! The passage is Colossians 1:9-10, which reads (italics added):

“For this reason [the Colossians’ strong faith] we also, since the day we heard about it, have not ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.”

It is the italicized part of this passage (verse 10) which caught my attention. Upon reading it, I thought: Yes, Lord, may this be the new longing of my heart. May I strive for it, and, in fact, may it be something all Christians seek after!

Think of it. What if your goal from here on is to “walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God”?

There are biblical passages which require deep study and meditation, but this is not one of them. Colossians 1:10 speaks for itself, and is easily understandable. Because it is, all believers can commit to seek after it.

A Brief Breakdown
For instance, let me put each of these directives in question form.

  • Do you want to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord?
  • Do you want to please the Lord in all respects?
  • Do you want to bear fruit in every good work?
  • Do you want to increase in the knowledge of God?

As a blood-purchased child of the Lord Jesus Christ, the answer is “Yes” to all four questions – and an enthusiastic “Yes” at that! It’s just a matter of asking God to give you the ability to live according to these four mandates. Let’s pray:

Heavenly Father, Your Word is glorious and life-changing and I seek to obey it. Father, I lift up to you Colossians 1:10 and ask you to give me the ability – and desire – to live by it. Dear Lord, please help me to live in a manner worthy of You; please You in all respects; bear fruit in every good work; and increase in the knowledge of You!

Ah, if only all Christians would seek this!
