Confronting Humanity

A Dream Scenario
Here’s a scenario I dream about.

God assembles the most arrogant and scornful of His detractors and deniers in a barren desert – a place from the trappings of modern comforts, technology, and inventions. There are no electrical devices, computers, or cell phones.

There are but brilliant men and women – scientists, mathematicians, educators, doctors, philosophers, politicians, and military strategists. The one thing they have in common is their unbelief in a divine Creator, accompanied by the notion that anyone who believes in one is a fool.

Suddenly a voice of incomparable authority and power explodes from the heavens. At its first uttering, humanity’s elite falls to their ashen faces, cowering in a fear they never knew existed. But despite their dread, they are cognizant of every word being spoken, every truth being transmitted by Almighty God:

Who is this that obscures My plans with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like men and women; I will question you, and you shall answer Me. Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone – while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?

The Almighty pauses for a few seconds, allowing the quivering masses to regain some measure of their wits. He continues:

Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? Let him who accuses God answer him! Brace yourself like men and women; I will question you, and you shall answer Me. Would you discredit My justice? Would you condemn Me to justify yourself? Do you have an arm like God’s, and can your voice thunder like His? Then adorn yourself with glory and splendor, and clothe yourself in honor and majesty. Unleash the fury of your wrath, look at all who are proud and bring them low, look at all who are proud and humble them, crush the wicked where they stand. Bury them all in the dust together; shroud their faces in the grave. Then I Myself will admit to you that your own right hand can save you (Job 38:2-7; 40:2; 7-14).

The Reply
What would be the reply to such a challenge?

Of course, this exchange did happen some 4,000-plus years ago between God Almighty and Job – and humanity has learned little since. Job, despite his great sufferings and blaming it all on God, loved the Creator of the Universe and never questioned His existence. When confronted, he replied the only way groveling man could reply:

I know that You can do all things; no purpose of Yours can be thwarted. You asked, “Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?” Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know. You said, “Listen now, and I will speak; I will question you, and you shall answer Me.” My ears had heard of You but now my eyes have seen You. Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes” (Job 42:2-6).

Confronting Humanity
The ultimate day of confrontation is coming, a day when “at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:10-11).

But by then, it will be too late for all those who went to their graves denying the Sovereign of the Universe and the Son He sent into the world to save them from their sins. Oh that God would confront the human race that it may humble itself as did Job, give God the glory He deserves, and save their souls in the process.

In reality, the Lord has always confronted humanity through both the witness of His creation and His “God-breathed” Word. May He continue to do so with life-changing power as we draw ever nearer to the end of this age, that men and women may “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and … be saved” (Acts 16:31)!
