Bible Ignorance

Offensive Pork
Here’s an example of the Bible ignorance which is so typical of today’s Christians.

My blogging friend Tom shared a recollection about how he and his wife, along with another couple (all 4 are believers), went out to eat together at a Chinese restaurant. He related how when the eggrolls came, the other couple began scooping out the pork pieces.

Turns out these folks believed Christians are obligated to observe the Mosaic Law, and know that eating pig products is “unkosher” or “unclean” (Leviticus 11:7). The offending pork morsels extracted, the couple consumed their eggrolls. You may read Tom’s post here.

Mosaic Law Foolishness
I rolled my eyes and sighed. Here, I won’t get into why Christians are NOT obligated to the Mosaic Law, however, I wrote 2 blogs on this, which are linked below:

Jesus, Yes; the Mosaic Law, No

Jesus, the Mosaic Law, and the Christian

What really got me about this couple was how biblically ignorant they were. If they had truly studied the Mosaic Law, they would know that ANYTHING touched by something unclean became unclean itself. Therefore, because the pork had touched the eggroll, the entire eggroll was unfit to eat!

Some examples of this rule (emphasis added):

  • Meat that touches anything ceremonially unclean must not be eaten; it must be burned up” (Leviticus 7:19).
  • “Every animal that does not have a divided hoof or that does not chew the cud is unclean for you; whoever touches the carcass of any of them will be unclean” (Leviticus 11:26).
  • Several verses in Leviticus Chapters 15 and 19.
  • “Then Haggai said, ‘If a person defiled by contact with a dead body touches one of these things [several food items], does it become defiled?’ ‘Yes,’ the priests replied, ‘it becomes defiled.’”

The point is that the unclean corrupts the clean. The previous 2 verses spoke about how the clean DOES NOT make the unclean holy, but this verse shows that the unclean DOES make the clean unholy.

Biblical Ignorance
This goes to show how biblically ignorant Christians can be. This couple – and numerous others – are wrong regarding the Mosaic Law. And this couple was completely biblically ignorant in thinking that extracting the pork morsels fulfilled the Mosaic Law.

So wrong on so many levels.

May God give His children the desire to study His Word with intelligence and to discern as precisely as possible what it means!
