Offensive Pork
Here’s an example of the Bible ignorance which is so typical of today’s Christians.
My blogging friend Tom shared a recollection about how he and his wife, along with another couple (all 4 are believers), went out to eat together at a Chinese restaurant. He related how when the eggrolls came, the other couple began scooping out the pork pieces.
Turns out these folks believed Christians are obligated to observe the Mosaic Law, and know that eating pig products is “unkosher” or “unclean” (Leviticus 11:7). The offending pork morsels extracted, the couple consumed their eggrolls. You may read Tom’s post here.
Mosaic Law Foolishness
I rolled my eyes and sighed. Here, I won’t get into why Christians are NOT obligated to the Mosaic Law, however, I wrote 2 blogs on this, which are linked below:
Jesus, Yes; the Mosaic Law, No
Jesus, the Mosaic Law, and the Christian
What really got me about this couple was how biblically ignorant they were. If they had truly studied the Mosaic Law, they would know that ANYTHING touched by something unclean became unclean itself. Therefore, because the pork had touched the eggroll, the entire eggroll was unfit to eat!
Some examples of this rule (emphasis added):
- “Meat that touches anything ceremonially unclean must not be eaten; it must be burned up” (Leviticus 7:19).
- “Every animal that does not have a divided hoof or that does not chew the cud is unclean for you; whoever touches the carcass of any of them will be unclean” (Leviticus 11:26).
- Several verses in Leviticus Chapters 15 and 19.
- “Then Haggai said, ‘If a person defiled by contact with a dead body touches one of these things [several food items], does it become defiled?’ ‘Yes,’ the priests replied, ‘it becomes defiled.’”
The point is that the unclean corrupts the clean. The previous 2 verses spoke about how the clean DOES NOT make the unclean holy, but this verse shows that the unclean DOES make the clean unholy.
Biblical Ignorance
This goes to show how biblically ignorant Christians can be. This couple – and numerous others – are wrong regarding the Mosaic Law. And this couple was completely biblically ignorant in thinking that extracting the pork morsels fulfilled the Mosaic Law.
So wrong on so many levels.
May God give His children the desire to study His Word with intelligence and to discern as precisely as possible what it means!

Excellent points. It’s scary when one realizes how much of this happens. Blessings David.

Amen David, much needed truths. If the devil cant interfere with reading God’s word, he is happy to distort it and misrepresent God.
The truths about the ‘eggroll’ bring such clarity to the issue, even likened to the impossibility of picking out certain sins from our heart.
Thank you brother, food for thought this morning. (Pun?)

Good post from someone who knows Mosaic Law. I always have to listen to lectures from my sons about how homosexuality is okay because it was in the OT but not in the New. They go on to tell me that if I’m going to follow the OT Law in one thing, I have to follow it in all, including the foods we eat and that we should be stoning sinners. Sigh! I just don’t know how to answer them, so appreciate your insight here. I will look at the other two posts that you referenced. I may have to share them with my sons if they start to argue with me again (which is inevitable since they are so liberal in their thinking).

Thank you, Vickie. Real quickly, regarding homosexuality, there are several commands against it in the New Testament. (Google “NT verses about homosexuality” or something like that).
Regarding the “entire” Mosaic Law, there is a difference between the laws the Israelites were to practice ceremonially, and the ones that are “civic.” The civic laws are the ones forbidding sexual immorality and the sort.
The “ceremonial” laws no longer apply, but the civic laws do.

I guess another question might be asked – what is unclean? And why is it unclean? Keeping it in the context of the Old Testament. In other words what /why unclean in the first place to be able to contaminate the clean? (Not sure if you covered this?)

The Bible tells us WHAT is unclean, but does not explain WHY. That was God’s doing. He told the Israelites that so and so was unclean, but didn’t tell them why. Of course, He had His reasons.

I believe the things that were unclean were related to the Israelites journey through the desert.
God knew they wouldn’t have the same levels of food preservation and hygiene available where they were headed.

Thanks, Angel. That’s the common perception. Though the Bible doesn’t specifically state this, I agree with it … and with you.

David, do you note Passover and other Jewish holidays, even just in memory?
I adapted a Shabbat type mindset after I hosted my young Jewish friend from Israel.
Not for a religious reason, but because of the beauty of the rest.
The Saturday night of his visit he did havdalah, and we joined him.
It was beautiful to me, because I love hearing him speak Hebrew. He translated it as he went, explaining everything.
I can see the beauty and comfort in the rituals, but I see how they give a type of false comfort, similar to what my Catholic relatives experience with the physical ritual of Roman Catholicism.
It would be interesting to read your views on the Jewish holidays and rituals.

David, thanks for the reference and for explaining the details of the Law that the couple in question were obviously not aware of. I remember that meal from 30 years ago like it was yesterday and also remember the feeling of being completely flabbergasted by what I was witnessing.

David – thank you so much for this post and I might have to dig in to the other posts that you gave links to in this writing. Ever since I started seminary I am amazed and embarrassed by how little I know about the Bible. It is scary to think that there are Christian “leaders” out there that are sending people astray. This is how cults are started. I want to make sure I have a solid foundation and that I can pass that on to others. Keep these posts coming – I learn from them and I eat them up!

It seems harsh to call them names. Maybe their motives were pure, though I agree they were misguided.
Sometimes it’s not ignorance, but zeal, that pushes people into doing things like that.
Anyway, surely they had read, “Peter, rise and eat.”

I called them ignorant in the clinical sense, as evaluating their biblical understanding. Not name calling. Zeal is not always separated from ignorance.
Thank you, Angel.

I sometimes wonder if doing “works” like this make the (misled) people feel better about themselves. The motive may be to please God, but it could also be to prove to Him (or oneself) that they are somehow better than others, and therefore more deserving of His favor.

Well said David. I actually have a Christian friend who observes all the Jewish feasts and the sabbath but not the dietary laws. And feels because of her practices she is more like Jesus. 🤷🏻♀️.

In agreement with you that we may have “desire” to study the word and to be “in it” daily! Let us never get tired of it! The more you read, the more you want to know!!! I love it! And oh what we learn form GOD’S wisdom if we truly study.
