Halloween Getting Ever Darker

A Darker Tone
I work in Old Winter Garden, Florida, a delightful and quaint town just outside of Orlando.

I love walking around its old streets, the lovely homes and neatly manicured yards offering idyllic surroundings for my energetic outings.

And the city itself does a beautiful job keeping its public grounds pristine and its atmosphere festive. They really know how to deck out the place at Christmastime and Independence Day.

But recently, Old Winter Garden has started adorning itself with nasty images of Halloween. When I began working here in 2012, I can’t remember them doing that. And when I began my hour-long walks around town, yes, the houses sampled some Halloween decorations, but nothing like the tripped-out creepiness I’m seeing now.

This quaint town has given itself over to Halloween gruesomeness, and I imagine this is occurring throughout the U.S. and other countries.

Embracing Wickedness
I can think of a number of children I knew in the 1980s and 1990s who would have been frightened by what’s put on open display today. Back then, Halloween was treated with more discretion as the ornamentation was cartoonish and fun.

Now, however, frightening skeletons are everywhere – those of humans and hellish beasts. There are terrifying spiders, witches, and demons. There is fake blood dripping down walls. And there is, in general, a perversity not present a short time ago.

There is something sinister about it all.

I imagine those adorning their homes – and towns – with such imagery are primarily unbelievers and, for the most part, are by human standards nice and good people. They would scoff at my thoughts and say, “What are you talking about? It’s all for fun.”

To them it is. But because their spiritual eyes are darkened, they cannot see what lies behind it all. They cannot see the festering darkness as it turns blacker every year.

And they cannot see WHO is behind it all.

The Evil One
We read in 1 John 5:19, “… the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.”

The evil one, of course, is Satan, and God has given him a sphere of authority over this world. He has wreaked much terror over the millennia, and would have done much more had God not been constraining him.

Now, however, we are drawing nearer to the end of the age and the return of Jesus Christ. Satan knows his time is getting short (Revelation 12:12) and has ramped up his efforts to foil God’s will. God is giving him more of a leash with which to function, and though he will come to his destruction (Revelation 20:7-10), Satan will indeed wreak global havoc until then.

One way he is doing this is by darkening the hearts and minds of “good” and “nice” people throughout the world who are now embracing things they never would have regarded years ago.

The ever-darkening visage of Halloween is just one example of how “common folks” are embracing Satan’s darkness. Gruesome images which would have caused people to cringe a generation ago no longer register even a blip on the fear meter.

And this is just Halloween. Over the next decade and on society will embrace far more darkness and nastiness as Satan will continue to extend his circle of evil influence.

May we who love the Lord Jesus fight against the increasing darkness by sharing with this lost world the light of the saving Gospel!
