The Gospel Pure and Simple

In essence, the Gospel – the Good News – of Jesus Christ is not all that simple.

It involves sharing the truth that all people are born separated from God because of sin (Psalm 51:5), and because of this we are children of God’s wrath (Ephesians 2:3). As such, we are destined for eternal condemnation in Hell followed by the Lake of Fire (Matthew 10:28; Revelation 20:15).

However, God sent the Lord Jesus Christ to the cross of Calvary to die for the sins of humanity (2 Corinthians 5:21; Galatians 1:4). However, salvation is not automatic. If we confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, we will be saved (Act 16:31). If we reject Christ, God’s wrath remains on us and we will be condemned (John 3:36).

But at its core – the pure and simple part – the Gospel is basically the fact that God came to save humanity from its sins (1 Timothy 1:15). And, to be clear, only Jesus – and Jesus alone – can bring salvation. As such, we read (emphasis added):

  • “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except (or only) through Me” (John 14:6).
  • “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).
  • “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5).
  • “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9).
  • “To Him [Jesus] all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins through His name” (Acts 10:43).
  • “But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it … the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe” (Romans 3:21-22).
  • “And this is eternal life, that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent” (John 17:3).

Jesus Christ is the only One who can save humanity from our sins. He is the only way.

This is the Gospel pure and simple!
