The Great Equalizer

Opposite Ends
I recently witnessed two ends of the “beauty” spectrum.

While walking up to a breakfast diner, I saw 3 homeless people loudly arguing nearby. These were truly ugly people in both action and appearance. Their speech was replete with obscene language, caring not a whit that they were offending passersby. Physically, the years of decay brought on by living out in the elements, as well as consuming huge amounts of unhealthy substances had done terrible things to their skin and hair.

On the other end of the spectrum, I later watched a trailer for a movie starring some big-name actors. Featured in the trailer were perhaps the 3 most beautiful actresses in the movie industry. I don’t know what they are like as people, but outside their attractiveness is unsurpassed.

By the world’s standards, there could not have been more polar opposites than these two sets of human beings, and yet, I was neither repulsed by the one nor impressed with the other. As a Christian, I had but one thought: In the most crucial area of life, these two very disparate classes of people are exactly equal.

Common Ground
So, what do the crass homeless people and the gorgeous movie starlets have in common besides the fact that each is mortal and will die?

What they have in common is spelled out in Revelation 20:11-15:

Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. … Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire [eternal damnation].

This is known theologically as “The Great White Throne Judgment,” the final “stop” for unbelievers before going on to their eternal punishment. (Believers would have already had their actions on Earth judged [none affecting salvation] at “the judgment seat of Christ” [2 Corinthians 5:10]).

The Great Equalizer
The Great White Throne Judgment will be the great equalizer for every unbeliever who ever lived. When Hollywood starlets come before Christ on His throne, He will not rave about their movies or compliment them on their beauty, but will judge them solely based on their rejection of Him.

When the world’s most downtrodden of vagabonds appear before the throne, the great Judge will not discuss the unfortunate circumstances which led to their failed lives, but will judge them solely based on their rejection of Him.

When the world’s most accomplished physicians, architects, politicians, humanitarians, athletes, religious leaders, attorneys, and anyone else of great esteem appear before Christ’s judgment seat, He will be unimpressed by their earthly deeds, but will  judge them solely based on their rejection of Him.

The Judgment Seat of Christ is the Great Equalizer. At that awful but just place, there will be neither beauty nor ugliness; neither accomplished nor abashed; neither powerful nor weak; neither important nor insignificant; neither great nor small. All that will matter will be what one has done with Christ.

May we who know and love the Savior be found faithful in telling this lost and dying world about Him!
