The Next Major Event on the Prophetic Timeclock

Laying the Groundwork
When Israel was “reborn” as a nation on May 14, 1948, the prophetic timeclock – which had been sluggishly ticking – was given a colossal jolt. The Jewish people were back in their land, and suddenly all the Old Testament promises regarding Israel’s end-times restoration were “back on.”

The clock got another bounce in 1967 when Israel won Jerusalem in the Six Day War and made it her capital. In 2013, another milestone was reached when Israel surpassed the U.S. as the world’s leading Jewish population center.

With more and more of the world’s Jewish citizenry relocating to the Holy Land, God’s end-time promises are falling ever more into place as He sets the stage for the final 7 years of this age of human history, also known as the 70th Week of the Book of Daniel.

With these staggering events transpiring before our eyes, it is fitting to wonder about the next major event on the prophetic timeclock.

The Covenant
The answer lies in Daniel 9:24-27, particularly verse 27, which reads: “He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.”

We won’t look at the entire passage, just the first part, “He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’” I have written about this passage in a previous blog (“The Backbone of Prophecy”), so I won’t go into the details here.

The “he” referred to is the coming Antichrist, with whom Israel will enter into a 7-year covenant which the Israelis believe will be a covenant of peace, but will turn tragically against her at the halfway point.

What will cause Israel to be so deceived as to the identity of this evil world ruler?

A Strong Leader
Recent Israeli elections give us a window into the thinking of at least half the nation. Regardless of your personal feelings for longtime Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, it is clear that his hardline policy toward Israel’s enemies was correct.

Previous leaders with less conservative (and more naïve) philosophies believed that surrendering land for peace to the Palestinians was the way to end the terrible hostilities between the two peoples.

However, every time Israel did this, she was burned. Nowhere was this more evident than in 2005 when Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip and turned all authority over to the Palestinians. The people ran roughshod over the region, destroying numerous Israeli structures, and using the Strip as a launching pad for thousands upon thousands of missiles into Israel.

Simply put, a “soft” approach toward a leadership which has no desire to make peace with Israel is foolishness. Israel’s enemies will ONLY settle for her total destruction. They have stated this since 1948, have never rescinded it, and continue to fiercely pursue it.

This is why Israel needs a strong, conservative leader to say “No” to ceding any more land for a peace that will never come. And for now, Israel lacks that firm leader.

Possible Scenario
So, how will all this lead to Israel’s signing of a 7-year covenant with the Antichrist?

Ever since 1948, the tiny nation has lived with the threat of war dangling over her head. She has seen her sons and daughters killed in numerous terrorist attacks. She also knows she is losing the P.R. war with the Palestinians – that the world considers Israel “the big, bad bully who is oppressing and impoverishing a gentle and peace-loving people.”

Israel knows she is hated, and the people hate being hated. She is tired of war, tired of seeing her people murdered, and tired of being despised despite her desire to live in peace.

All of this will lead to Israel saying, “We give up. We can endure this no longer. We need someone who can make peace between us and our enemies. If we can do that, we’ll do whatever he asks in return.”

That person is out there somewhere, and one day he will make himself known. He will be Satan’s chosen vessel in the end-times. He will be the Antichrist, and he will deceive the nations of the world, Israel included.

How will the world know him? He will be the one with whom Israel signs a 7-year “peace” covenant – the next major event on God’s prophetic timeclock.
