A Praiseworthy Past
Ever since her inception, the United States has been one of the world’s most important nations. The U.S. has led the way in science, industry, military prowess, and the promotion of freedom throughout the globe. America has also been a beacon of religious freedom, a bastion of hope and opportunity for multitudes seeking a fuller life.

The U.S. has had a praiseworthy past, but what about the future, specifically, the end-times? What role will the U.S. play in God’s plan for Planet Earth? Is she to be a key player on the prophetic playing field, or does God have something else planned for her?

A Great Legacy
God has used America to accomplish great things. Her endeavors for the cause of freedom and her standing as a force for good have been America’s greatest legacy. America has benefited greatly from such a legacy, and is perhaps the most blessed nation which ever existed. There are three primary reasons for this.

First, the U.S. is founded on biblical truth and principles. Established as a sanctuary of religious freedom, God and the Bible were the pillars upon which the nation was built, and God has reciprocated: “Those who honor me I will honor” (1 Samuel 2:20). America has certainly been honored.

Second, more missionaries have gone out from America than any other nation. In 2010, the most recent year when a comprehensive study of missionaries was made, America was responsible for 127,000 of the world’s 400,000 Christian missionaries. Brazil was second at 34,000.[1] In years past, the percentage of U.S. missionaries was higher.

Third is America’s support of Israel. The “doctrine” of God’s grace to those who are kind to Israel was established early in the Bible: “I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you” (Genesis 12:3). Since Israel’s “rebirth” in 1948, the U.S. has been her greatest ally.

However …
The U.S. and Israel share some similarities, most notably that they are nations founded on the belief in the God of the Bible. Just as God has blessed and preserved Israel, so does He, to an extent, do the same for America. However …

There is a major difference between the two nations; that being that Israel is a covenant nation and America is not. God has made numerous promises to Israel concerning her future well-being. It began with the Abrahamic Covenant in Genesis 12, and more were added. (Do a search for “God’s covenants with Israel” to discover what they are.) These covenants testify to God’s honesty, reliability, and trustworthiness. If God does not make good on His covenants with Israel, then how can He be trusted to fulfill His promises to anyone? But God will fulfill all of His promises to Israel, and she will one day live in perfect peace and safety.

However … God has made no covenant with America. If she honors Him, He will honor her. If she turns from Him, He will punish her. Those with discerning minds can easily see how far the U.S. is straying from God – mocking, disdaining, and dishonoring Him at every turn. Furthermore, America over the past few decades has been turning her back on her longtime ally, Israel, though President Trump has slowed this trend for a time.

The U.S. in Prophecy
It is this turning against Israel – in connection with her turning against God – which is the key to determining where the U.S. fits into God’s end-times plan.

zechariah-book

At the end of the age, Israel will stand alone and be targeted for destruction. Zechariah 14:1-2 says: “A day of the LORD is coming, Jerusalem, when your possessions will be plundered and divided up within your very walls. I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to fight against it … .”

Two-thirds of Israel will be destroyed (Zechariah 13:8), but just when it appears the nation will be obliterated, God will come to her rescue: “Then the LORD will go out and fight against those nations, as he fights on a day of battle” (Zechariah 14:3). Following that, the Lord will wage war against the nations and defeat them:

In those days and at that time, when I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem, I will gather all nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. There I will put them on trial for what they did to my inheritance, my people Israel, because they scattered my people among the nations and divided up my land (Joel 3:1-2).

And there it is: America in prophecy (notice the emphasis on the word all). Her great legacy in shambles, America will turn totally (especially following the Rapture) against God and Israel with abandon. In the end, America will be among the nations which war against Israel, and eventually against God Himself. This is America’s prophetic destiny.

Though sobering, you as a believer have your marching orders: to make disciples (Matthew 28:19). What God does with nations is His business; that to which he assigns you is yours. May you be found faithful to be about the Lord’s business in this extraordinary time of history!
